More than 400 drivers cited for distracted driving in Boardman
BOARDMAN TWP., Ohio - Several weeks ago in September, Ohio State Highway troopers on motorcycles began a crackdown on distracted driving on Route 224 in Boardman.
Lieutenant Ben Dennison from the Canfield Post told 21 News that this section of the road has been a hotspot for drivers using their phones.
"We wanted to do something about it. And I feel like we always approach things the same way, and this was just something different, a little bit more safer for the bikes and for the other motoring public," Dennison said.
Dennison stated that efforts to prevent distracted driving led to an increase in the number of traffic stops. Approximately 430 individuals were cited for distracted driving offenses by motorcycle troopers.
"It's a gigantic number, and kind of appalling. We see it all the time in my personal car. But to get to that kind of number, it's just very surprising," Dennison said.
Currently, the motorcycle troopers are assigned to other duties, but Dennison warns that drivers should not let their guard down, as this may not be the last time they are out on patrol.
"We're looking at areas to do it again, but time will tell," Dennison said.
In the meantime, the lieutenant offered some advice for people who use their phones while driving.
"Put in the trunk if it is a distraction to you. Put it in your purse, whatever it may be, just so it's out of the way," Dennison said.
In Ohio, the law prohibits drivers from holding a cell phone while operating a vehicle.
