Trumbull County officials eye cooperation with Youngstown Air Reserve mission
In a show of support to the federal government and the department of defense, the Trumbull County Planning Commission and Hubbard Township Zoning Commission met with township trustees to discuss adopting a resolution that would make clear the criteria for land uses surrounding the Youngstown Air Reserve Station.
"The small bash that's inside this green area they called that the bird and air strike hazard area and so there are development standards that are written into the template document that apply to land uses moving into the future," Julie Green, Director of the Trumbull County Planning Commission said.
The goal is to create a military compatibility area but also maintain local control in the future.
No sky scrapers or landfills would be acceptable land use, for example. They must be compatible with YARS' mission and the station itself needs to be compatible with surrounding communities, Green said.
"Let's say there was a large tractor property there that hasn't been farmed in some time with livestock and possibly the idea that a family member got the property and wanted to expand and start doing that. This could potentially put some restrictions on it that concern some of our, the members of our zoning commission," Jason Tedrow, Hubbard Township Trustee said.
Tedrow said adopting certain things in a resolution could potentially affect the community down the road like ponds and farming areas.
The resolution still needs some review so it's back to the drawing board for now. Council will revisit the resolution down the line.
