NILES An investigation into an alleged domestic violence situation in Niles turned into a police pursuit that ended with the suspect jumping into a pond at a Warren golf course.

The incident began just before 1:30 a.m. Wednesday, when officers responded to a call at a Royal Mall Drive apartment regarding a man in a black SUV allegedly pointing a gun at a woman.

The alleged victim, a 19-year-old woman, told police that the father of her two daughters, 22-year-old Trudarious McClendon, was angry over a recent breakup, had entered her home holding a handgun with an extended magazine.

The woman told police that McClendon shoved her in the chest before going upstairs to search the apartment, despite her statement that no one else was present except for their two children.

Police say McClendon fired a shot as he drove away from the apartment.

An officer later tried to pull over the suspect’s black GMC Yukon as it left a gas station on U.S. Route 422.

Police say they pursued the fleeing vehicle westbound into Warren, with speeds reaching approximately 70 mph. The chase ended when McClendon pulled into a driveway on Foster Drive and ran toward a nearby woods.

Using a K9 tracking dog, police say they found McClendon after he jumped into a retention pond at the Trumbull Country Club and was swimming around before finally surrendering.

The children in the apartment at the time of the alleged confrontation in Niles were later safely retrieved by a relative.

McClendon was booked on charges that include domestic violence, burglary, aggravated menacing, and failure to comply with an order or signal of a police officer.
