Art students at Youngstown State University are working to create a series of murals to transform City Centre One's elevator spaces into immersive artistic experiences.

The collaborative project between YSU's Department of Art and the Western Reserve Port Authority (WRPA) is led by art professor Dragana Crnjak through her site-specific mural class.

"The project goes beyond creating visually compelling artwork. Our primary objective is professional development. Students are gaining essential competencies in planning, organizing and executing large-scale art projects through structured phases of collaborative ideation, design, material preparation and execution," Crnjak said in a press release.

Crnjak told 21 News these murals will "transform the experience" of traveling up and down these elevators and encourage the celebration of the identities of the City Centre One building.

"There are a lot of amazing businesses in that one building that pretty much build the economy of our city and our region, so we are excited to start that [project]," Crnjak said.

Students will start designing the mural in two weeks.

The department's current project, "Between the Words" offers a collaborative environment for senior citizens, YSU students and local community members to create art together. That piece will be installed in the Butler Institute of American Art in November.
