YPD officer recovering after south side shooting Thursday
City leaders say the Youngstown Police officer who was injured while responding to a call of a suspicious prowler on Youngstown's south side is recovering. The officer was shot in the arm; the bullet hitting an artery during that encounter.
Mayor Tito Brown says he visited the officer following the incident and says he's recovering, and in good spirits, but suggested it's likely a long road ahead. He commended everyone who responded, including the officer who provided backup, and likely performed a life-saving measure.
"He applied a tourniquet to the arm and they're trained, and that's why we continued to say the young men and women in this department are trained," said Mayor Brown, adding that if the officer didn't have the tourniquet that it might've been different.
The suspect was later identified as 28-year old Arthur Tyrone Mitchell, whose uncle made a plea to the public during exclusive interview with 21 News Anchor Sydney Canty.
Mitchell was killed during an exchange of gunfire, inside a home on Rush Boulevard with police, hours after the one of the first officers to arrive at the home was shot. It's still unclear if it was self-inflicted.
Meanwhile, some residents are still processing what happened.
"I head the first, like three gunshots and I'm like 'Oh my god', what is happening," said Geneva who stuck inside her home for hours as police worked their way to the suspect who was inside a home, just a few doors down.
"I'm seeing all these cop cars coming up, one by one, and I'm seeing all them with rifles and I'm like what's going on?" Geneva recalled.
Her mother, who stepped away for short time before chaos ensued, was unable to get back to her because all roads leading home were blocked.
"We basically for the four hours, stayed on the phone together because I may not physically be able to be there but I'm going to be there with you to the end," said Shernita.
The timeline between the initial encounter between police officers and the suspect, until the suspect is killed is under investigation. A spokesperson for YPD says BCI is handling the matter.
