CANFIELD, Ohio - On Saturday, the Parks Garden Center in Canfield hosted the annual Ohio Valley Giant Pumpkin Growers Weigh-Off.

Quinn Werner, treasurer of the Ohio Valley Giant Pumpkin Growers, stated that farmers dedicated their entire summer to growing pumpkins for this event.

"[We] have put tons of hours in and fretted over everything. And now's the big day and we all got them here, and they're in one piece, and we're going to weigh them off and see...what we end up accomplishing," Werner said.

Growers from several states, including Ohio, Pennsylvania, Michigan, and West Virginia, showcased their enormous pumpkins to a crowd of onlookers in hopes of winning the top prize for the heaviest pumpkin.

The group has won the top 10 awards multiple times and holds the record for the two largest pumpkins weighed globally last year.

"So, we're basically the premier giant pumpkin club in the world," Werner said.

Organizers said the event is more than just a competition it is about community.

"I just think [this] brings everybody together. You know, families can come here, so we can all sit around and talk. The best thing about this is networking and meeting new people. I got friends all over the world now because I grow giant vegetables," Werner said.

Werner also explained how challenges from excessive rain and humidity affected the size and quality of entries.

"Oh, the humidity [was] horrible. This year was very tough our numbers are down on entries because of the weather," Werner said.
