YOUNGSTOWN - New information is coming to light about the man who police said shot a Youngstown officer last Thursday, before the standoff resulted in the man's death.

Investigators have identified the suspect as 28-year-old Arthur Tyrone Mitchell.

Police said Mitchell opened fire on officers responding to a call about a suspicious person on Rush Boulevard.

One officer was shot in the arm and was rushed to the hospital, and is expected to survive.

The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation is leading the probe into the Youngstown shooting.

Court and police records show Mitchell was previously arrested in Charlotte, North Carolina, in connection with an attempted armed robbery in late 2019 that led to a shootout with an off-duty police officer.

According to Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police, an officer was reportedly with her husband in an apartment complex parking lot when multiple suspects, including Mitchell, tried to rob her husband at gunpoint.

Mitchell was arrested days later and charged with two counts of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, attempted robbery with a dangerous weapon, robbery with a dangerous weapon and second-degree burglary.

North Carolina Court records also show that, as recently as October 2, 2025, Mitchell failed to appear in court, and an order for his arrest was issued, just days before Mitchell's life ended during a police confrontation in Youngstown.

The Bureau of Criminal Investigation continues to investigate last week’s shooting in Youngstown.
