YOUNGSTOWN  A disabled, homeless man was sitting in his wheelchair outside a Northside Youngstown convenience store early Tuesday when he was assaulted with a wooden stick.

Police arrived at the store in the 1700 block of Logan Avenue at 2:40 am to find the man crying out in pain, with his baseball cap soaked with blood from the wounds he received when another man struck him on his head and arms.

The man told police officers he was struck 20 to 30 times with the wooden stick.

According to the police report, the suspect told the man in the wheelchair to empty his pockets. When he didn't, the suspect began to beat the man as he attempted to get away from the attacker, while being struck by the wooden stick.

The injured man told officers that the alleged attacker was a white male with short dark hair, whom he knew to panhandle outside the store occasionally.

Officers found a wooden stick used in the attack in the roadway.

The injured man was transported to the emergency room for treatment.

Officers were able to copy the footage of the attack from the store's security footage, which Youngstown detectives are now investigating.
