Bloomfield driver charged with death of unborn child in buggy crash

MESOPOTAMIA TWP., Ohio - A Trumbull County woman has been charged after investigators say the van she was driving rear-ended an Amish buggy in Mesopotamia Township, resulting in the death of an unborn child.
Jessica Scialabba, 32, of Bloomfield Township, was booked into the county jail Tuesday after the Ohio State Highway Patrol filed a charge of vehicular homicide against her in Newton Falls Municipal Court.
The crash occurred on the evening of May 12 on State Route 87.
According to the OSP traffic crash report, Scialabba was driving a Chevrolet Express van westbound on SR 87 when it struck the Amish buggy from the rear, forcing the buggy off the right side of the roadway. At the time of the collision, the roadway was dark and not lit.
A 25-year-old pregnant woman and an 11-month-old boy, who were riding in the buggy, were life-flighted to a Cleveland hospital with serious injuries. Troopers say the charge was filed because the woman’s unborn child died.
Another passenger in the buggy, a two-year-old boy, was also seriously injured.
Neither Scialabba, nor the buggy driver was hurt.
