Smith Township Police were busy on Friday, closing down miles of road due to dead chicken carcasses and chicken parts being spilled.

Officers at the scene told 21 News that the dead chickens and chicken parts were scattered down multiple roads from western Mahoning County all the way to Ravenna.

Traffic is being diverted from Middletown, Oyster, Bandy Roads and a few other roads in Smith Township.

Smith Township Police Lieutenant Steve McDaniel told 21 News that local chicken farms had contracted with a company to haul away dead chicken carcasses from the local facilities.

The dump truck that left the farm was stopped nearly 20 miles away at the intersection of State Route 14 and State Route 5 in Ravenna.

It is unclear what caused the carcasses to fall out of the dump truck, but our videographer at the scene said the smell along the roads was intense, of rotting poultry.

The Mahoning County Health Department recommended that the roads be closed until the spillage could be cleaned up. People and animals can become sick from bacteria from the dead chickens.

Also assisting in the clean-up efforts were the Sebring Fire Department, Mahoning County Engineers, and the Goshen Road Department.

The driver of the dump truck was cited for an unsecured load.
