Brungard breaks YSU record as Penguins beat Illinois State, 40-35

The Youngstown State football team snapped its two-game skid with a 40-35 road win over No. 9 ranked Illinois State.
Quarterback Beau Brungard broke a YSU record with 528 total offensive yards, besting Ricky Davis's 447 yard game back in 2017.
The Penguins jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the first quarter thanks to a pair of field goals for Andrew Lastovka. Brungard then ran for the first score of the game in the second quarter, which made it 12-0.
The Redbirds went on to score 14 unanswered, as they led 14-12 going into halftime.
Illinois State added another score early in the third to make it 21-12. The Penguins responded when Brungard connected on a deep ball to Mike Solomon for a 36-yard touchdown and they trailed 21-19.
The Redbirds would respond with their own touchdown before the end of the third to make it 28-19.
In the fourth quarter it was all YSU, as the Penguins scored three-straight touchdowns retaking the lead at 40-28. The Redbirds scored once more but the Penguins offense finished off the game running down the clock to zero.
Brungard accounted for five total touchdowns. He threw for 328 passing yards and 200 rushing.
Youngstown State improved to 4-3 on the season and 1-2 in the Missouri Valley Football Conference.
The Penguins will host Murray Sate on Saturday October 25th at 2 PM for their Homecoming game.
