CANFIELD Canfield Police and the Ohio Attorney General have charged a suspect in connection with a rape and kidnapping that allegedly took place in 2000.

A man recently released after serving 9 years in prison for rape and burglary in Trumbull County is behind bars again, for an alleged kidnapping and rape in Canfield 25 years ago.

Fifty-seven-year-old Jack Sheetz, formerly of Canfield, was arrested by U.S. Marshals in Akron, according to Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost.

The Mahoning County Grand Jury issued a sealed indictment against Sheetz earlier this week.

Sheetz was indicted by the Mahoning County Common Pleas Court Grand Jury on three felony counts, including one count of rape and two counts of kidnapping.

The assault, which occurred in November 2000, was initially investigated by the Canfield Police Department. The Special Prosecutions Section of the Attorney General’s Office will handle the case.

The Ohio Attorney General's Office confirms that Sheetz is the long-sought-after suspect in a rape and baseball bat attack on a 30-year-old woman outside business offices on North Broad Street.

In 2015, the Police announced a $25,000 reward for information to help their investigation.

Sheetz was booked into the Summit County Jail on Thursday afternoon on a "courtesy hold."

A courtesy hold is put in place to allow a county jail to hold onto an inmate for another jurisdiction that has a warrant or other legal claim to that suspect.

His arrest comes shortly after he was released on parole from the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction on Sept. 10. Sheetz had been serving a nine-year sentence in 2018 for aggravated burglary, rape, and aggravated robbery committed in Trumbull County, according to state records.

21 News has reached out to the Canfield Police Department for the police report, but has not received it at this time.

No date has been set at this time for Sheetz to appear in court.
