Three Howland Little Tigers teams competed in regional Super Bowl
HOWLAND TWP., Ohio - After months of hard work, all three Howland Little League football teams went to the field for the Steel Valley Youth Conference Super bowl.
It's an event that shows the hard work the student athletes put in since they started practicing in July. Sunday afternoon, three games were played at Lombardo Field to see which teams would win the gold.
Coaches with the Howland Little Tigers (HLT) said it's been a long time since three of the teams at the regional Super bowl represented Howland.
“This is the first time in quite a long time that all three teams have made the super bowl. It's, you know, all three teams have put in the hard work all season, good attitudes, just and that's why they're here playing in the Superbowl,” said Frank Hanshaw, head coach for Howland Little Tigers 145lb team.
Hanshaw and the other coaches recognized the hard work the students put in to get to this point.
Parents and players also showed their excitement as the HLT teams competed for first place. For many of the players at the event, their next time on the turf will be as a middle school athlete.
“All three teams were pumped up. A lot of them, this is going to be their last year down here at HLT, and they'll be moving on to middle school,” said Hanshaw.
“HLT is, I feel, a really amazing bridge program for these kids to be able to learn and experience their sports, figure out what they enjoy, and then now we make it all the way to the Superbowl with all three teams. It's historical,” said Willa Peters, Howland Little League Football cheerleading coach.
In game one, the HLT Squiggs went head to head with the Hubbard Little Eagles.
Game two was between the HLT Pee Wees and New Castle Little Red Hurricanes.
In the final game, the HLT Midgets took on the Hickory Little Hornets.
“The kids are all over the moon, excited. They really want to commit and support our teams and our boys. Really want the win,” said Peters.
Two of the three HLT teams did take home the gold, but it was a historic game for everyone involved.
