Giant Eagle offers double gift card rewards in exchange for pennies November 1
PITTSBURGH, Pa - As the U.S. Department of the Treasury phases out the production of the penny, the Federal Reserve has begun limiting penny deliveries to banks and commercial customers, resulting in the reduced availability of the penny, creating a challenge for retailers to provide exact change to customers paying with cash.
That's why Giant Eagle is giving customers an incentive to bring their pennies to any of its stores on Saturday, November 1.
Customers who bring pennies to any of Giant Eagle's stores Saturday, November 1 between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. can exchange them for a Giant Eagle gift card equal to twice the value of the pennies exchanged.
There is a minimum of 50 cents and a maximum of $100 in pennies per transaction, meaning customers can get a gift card valued up to $200 just for exchanging their pennies.
"We invite everyone to check their change jars, desk drawers and couch cushions to help keep pennies available to those who choose to play with cash," said Giant Eagle President and CEO Bill Artman.
This step will allow the company to provide exact change to customers as it awaits formal guidance from the U.S. government regarding future rounding practices.
