One dead, another taken to hospital after crash on Interstate 680

BOARDMAN Crews from Boardman and the Ohio State Highway Patrol (OSHP) were responding to the area of mile marker 12 on Interstate 680 near Boardman on Friday for reports of a crash.
According to the Boardman Police Department dispatch, the fire department and police department were called to the scene just before 6 p.m. for reports of a multiple-vehicle accident in the area underneath the Route 224 bridge.
A dispatcher with OSHP confirmed that the Mahoning County Coroner's Office was on the scene of this crash and that one person has died.
According to a news release from the OSHP, two vehicles were traveling along Interstate 680 in the southbound lanes.
Alex Lowry, 39, of McKeesport, Pennsylvania, was driving a 2014 Dodge Charger, while another 26-year-old driver was operating a 2010 Nissan Rogue.
Preliminary investigations revealed that while the two vehicles were traveling in the left lane of Interstate 680 southbound, the Dodge struck the Nissan from the rear.
Lowry's vehicle then went off the left side of the roadway, striking a guard rail and three concrete bridge supports before overturning.
The release states that Lowry was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash and was ejected. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Nissan also drove off the left side of the roadway, striking the guard rail and overturning.
The driver of the Nissan was taken to the hospital with minor injuries.
Investigators say that speed does appear to be a factor in the crash at this time.
The roadway was closed for about three hours while crews worked and officials investigated, reopening just before 9 p.m.
Members of the Ohio Department of Transportation say that the bridge sustained no damage and determined the bridge to be safe.
