An investigation has been initiated in connection with a multi-state outbreak of Listeria monocytogenes infections, including one illness in Ohio.

According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the investigation is being conducted by themselves, the U.S. Department of Agriculture Food Safety and Inspection Service (USDA FSIS) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

The investigation connects to several recall notices affecting prepared pasta meals sold at stores across the United States.

Recall notices were sent out for several products, including smoked mozzarella pasta salad sold at Giant Eagle and Market District stores, linguine with beef meatballs and marinara meals at Walmart stores and chicken fettuccine alfredo products sold at several retailers, including Walmart.

The FDA is working with state and local partners to determine whether those who became sick ate infected foods, or if additional foods may be contaminated.

An update was shared on October 30, 2025, that outlined the latest number of illnesses associated with the recalled products.

According to the release, the latest CDC count revealed that a total of seven new illnesses have been reported from three states, including two additional deaths.

In total, 27 people have become infected with the outbreak strain of Listeria from across 18 states.

Of the 26 people with information available, 25 have been hospitalized, and 6 deaths have been reported.

Additionally, one pregnancy-associated illness resulted in a fetal loss, according to the release.

Listeria monocytogenes can cause listeriosis, an infection that can cause the following symptoms:

  • Fever
  • Muscle aches
  • Nausea
  • Tiredness
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea

More severe cases of listeriosis can cause headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance and convulsions.

Serious infections of listeriosis are more likely to affect pregnant women and newborns, those aged 65-years-old or older and people with weakened immune systems.

Listeria infection during pregnancy can also lead to miscarriage, stillbirth, premature delivery or life-threatening infections.

The FDA is recommending that consumers double-check refrigerators and freezers for any recalled products.

More updates will be made available by the FDA as they become available.
