YSU receives Foundry Educational Foundation certification

YOUNGSTOWN According to a news release issued Monday, Youngstown State University (YSU) has earned the Foundry Educational Foundation (FEF) certification.
YSU is the first university in Ohio to receive the certification and is one of six recipients selected in the 2025-2026 cycle, according to the release.
The FEF certification recognizes colleges and universities across the United States that meet the foundation's standards in metalcasting and foundry education.
According to the release, this certification will allow YSU to expand its educational offerings in advanced manufacturing and metalcasting disciplines.
"This certification sets YSU apart as a leader in foundry education and advanced manufacturing," said Brian Vuksanovich, professor in the School of Computer Science, Information and Engineering Technology.
Vuksanovich continued," Our program has consistently received requests from employers seeking graduates with foundry experience. This recognition helps strengthen our connection to industry and supports our students with scholarships, internships and professional opportunities."
The university's American Foundry Society student chapter also played a role in earning the certification, demonstrating excellence through job placement, community engagement and consistent top finishes in national competitions.
According to the release, YSU's team earned "Best in Show" and "Best Performance" during the 2025 Steel Founders' Cast in Steel Competition.
"This has been a long-term investment by a lot of people who believe in what we are building here," said Vuksanovich.
Vuksanovich continued," It's not just about recognition - it's about preparing our students for high-demand, high-skill careers in an industry that truly needs them."
