Voters in Springfield Township, Mahoning County, have approved a proposed additional 3.5 mill tax for its Fire and EMS Services.

912 votes were received for the levy, and 639 votes against the levy.

The levy is for emergency services for the township, providing funds for full-time, part-time firefighters, emergency medical service, and administration; firefighting equipment and ambulance equipment, including paramedic, or other emergency medical services, operated by a fire department.

The levy will provide approximately $851,668 annually, which will cost property owners $123 for each $100,000 of the appraised value, first due in 2026.

Springfield fire chief Michael Wright said he's thankful to the community for supporting the department, acknowledging that they needed to be careful not to ask for too much.

""There were a lot of long discussions and long meetings figuring out, ya know, not just when to do it, but how to do it to make sure we were going for the right amount. We didn't want to go for too big of an amount and hurt the community," Wright said.
