Decision 2025: Tito Brown loses race for Youngstown mayor, thanks community

Tito Brown conceded the race for Youngstown Mayor after losing to Derrick McDowell by just over 900 votes.
"It is probably not the results that we thought it would be, it's not the results we thought that it should be, but I've had the best time on my journey being the mayor of the city of Youngstown," Brown said.
Surrounded by dozens of friends and loved ones, Brown thanked them for their support, got a little emotional when his son spoke on the impact Brown has had on his life and he told his supporters that he feels like he's done everything he wanted to do in these last 8 years.
"We've shown how we can get the city's financials in order, we've got a safer city, a healthier community, and a brighter future for the next generation," Brown said. "The city of Youngstown is not the laughing stock anymore. There's things going on, things are happening so well in the city of Youngstown," he said.
Brown adds, he respects the voter's decision.
"I've been doing this since 2003. The school board, city council, president of council, mayor, so they say 'let's let somebody else try,' and I'm at that point if that's the will of the voters let somebody else try, we'll let him do that," he said.
Brown said he's celebrating because they've set a standard and raised the bar for the city of Youngstown. He just hopes McDowell will continue on in that, focusing on the citizens.
"This was my assignment and God decided it was only eight years he wanted me to be for an assignment," Brown said.
Brown thanked his supporters and everyone who voted, whether their vote was for him or not.
"Thank you. The voters speak, we always listen and that's the thing about me, I always say the voters are the ones who put me in here. Everyday I say I have a job interview and every four years get an evaluation. 'Well you did good mayor, let somebody else carry the torch,' and I get that point. If this is my time to pass it onto somebody else, that's what we're doing," he said.
Brown is unsure what's next, though he jokingly kicked around the idea of becoming a football coach at Youngstown City Schools.
Right now however, he said he wants to enjoy his family.
"I just wanna continue being a father, a grandfather and whatever God has for me then we'll figure it out then," Brown said. "I really truly love this community, I love the voters, this is their decision. I respect it so much. I'll be here, I'm not going anywhere, Tito Brown will always be a citizen of Youngstown," he said.
Derrick McDowell will take over in the new year.
