Accidental death ruled in Struthers child shooting

STRUTHERS The Mahoning County Coroner's Office has ruled the August shooting death of a three-year-old Struthers boy as accidental.
The child who died in a Struthers home this summer after being shot with an unsecured firearm has been identified as Gionni Jackson.
Struthers police first responded to a home on the 400 Block of Spring Street on the afternoon of Friday, Aug. 15, after the boy was shot. Police later stated the shooting occurred when the boy accessed a firearm that was not secured.
According to Struthers police Captain and acting chief DJ Aldish at the time of the incident, the boy died from the injury.
"There was an unsecured firearm in a home, and the worst possible thing happened, and a child got hold of it," Aldish said.
Following the shooting, a passerby began to drive the child and a parent toward the hospital.
They stopped at a plaza near the corner of Mathews Road and South Avenue, where they were met by Boardman police and fire crews.
The child was transported to St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital's main campus, according to police.
The Mahoning County Sheriff is investigating the incident.
