MCDONALD, Ohio - A significant tech investment may soon be in the works for the Village of McDonald.

A company is considering plans to build a new billion-dollar data center at the former McDonald Steel facility. However, many details are still under wraps at this time.

A section of land within the McDonald Industrial Park could become the location for the new data center once Applied Partners completes the cleanup of the site.

"We [are] responsible for taking the buildings down and cleaning up any contamination from the original McDonald Steel factory that was here, which will include what was on the other side of the property that used to be the U.S. Steel property," Doug Soper, Vice President of Applied Partners told 21 News.

Cleanup is expected to be completed by the end of the year, with major developments likely to follow.

"There's a developer that we're talking to that we're not really allowed to speak about right now, because it's still early," Soper said.

Currently, there is talk of creating 300 jobs during the construction of the data center, followed by 100 permanent jobs once it is operational.

The mayor is on board with this opportunity.

"So my thought is any business that wants to do business within our village, whether it be a coffee shop, an industrial manufacturing facility or data center, we're open for business," McDonald Mayor, Ray Lewis, said.

This potential development follows a recent decision by leaders in Lordstown to ban data centers due to concerns about utilities and noise.

However, Lewis mentioned that he cannot comment on how the village might address any concerns until more information becomes available.
