Details released in suspected Liberty Township shoplifting incident that led to crash

LIBERTY - A police report reveals more details leading up to a crash that cut power to thousands in Liberty Township and Girard on Tuesday.
According to the report from Liberty Township PD, police were called to Walmart on Goldie Road for a shoplifting incident. Officers were given a description of the suspects and their vehicle.
Officers found the suspect vehicle turning left onto Colonial Drive from Hadley Avenue. Soon after this, police say the vehicle crashed into a telephone pole causing a "huge spark."
According to the report, the crash damaged two telephone poles, and caused several live wires to hang low to the ground. The crash cut power to over 1,100 people in Liberty Township and Girard, with some being without power for several hours.
Police were able to take both suspects in the car into custody. Police say one of those suspects admitted to stealing mutliple items from Walmart including beer and meats.
Police say security camera video from the store shows the suspect stealing several items from the store and loading them in the car and getting into the passenger seat, followed by the car driving away.
Girard Municipal Court records do not show information on any charges for these suspects at this time.
