A nonprofit is celebrating its 50th year of helping cancer patients throughout the Mahoning Valley.

Silver Lining Cancer Fund was founded by Dr. Lawrence Pass over 50 years ago.

According to a release outlining the Ladies and Gentlemen's Night Out event, Dr. Pass worked as an oncologist with the Youngstown Hospital Association in Youngstown and helped donate time and money to help cancer patients in the tri-county area.

Silver Lining Cancer Fund is operated by a group of healthcare professionals and volunteers, and Thursday's event aimed to remember Dr. Pass, who died on March 24, 2021, and support cancer survivors.

"Here we are, fifty years later, and still going on. My father, may he rest in peace, is no longer with us, but his legacy lives on with this wonderful organization," said Audrey Pass, the daughter of Dr. Pass.

Proceeds raised during the event will go towards Silver Lining Cancer Fund, which will go directly to supporting cancer patients going through treatment and their families.

"[We] just want to thank everyone who comes out to support this organization... My father would be so proud and touched to see that people are still giving and caring as he did his whole life," said Pass.

Jennifer Frederick, a resident of North Lima, was recognized during the event as a cancer survivor herself who was originally diagnosed with stage four melanoma cancer.

"I like to be here to support others, to share my story, so people understand that just because you do have cancer, and it may be a stage four, it's not a death sentence. There's always a way to fight through things, and I'm an example of it," said Frederick.
