Santiago family helping starve hunger, one meal at a time
At a time when food insecurity levels are at their highest and millions are impacted by the freeze on SNAP benefits, food pantries and local organizations across the valley have been stepping up to the plate.
However, one local family in Campbell is doing its part to help out the local communities too.
Mylissa Santiago and her husband, Benji, started a pantry inside the front porch of their home during the first week of November.
"She came up with this idea; the next day she posted it online, and man, the response was beautiful," said Benji Santiago, referring to his wife.
People near and far responded quickly, donating plenty of food and filling up the pantry, which is available for anyone in need to come and pick up.
"Then people started giving money, so then we would go to the grocery store, and we would put it in, and it's just a cycle; it just keeps happening," said Mylissa Santiago.
Both the food and money ended up being the key ingredients in close to 200 hot meals that were served Saturday night. The Santiago family knew they would have their hands full preparing the food but didn't hesitate the slightest when the opportunity arose.
Car by car pulled up to the 5th Street home, as volunteers made trip after trip, bringing the food out to each family.
Everything is homemade, from chicken, pasta, and meatloaf to rice, green beans, and plenty more. Complimenting the community support: family, friends, and various Campbell schools' boys' and girls' athletic programs.
"I just want to give a great thanks to everyone who has helped because if it wasn't for the volunteers, and it wasn't for the donations, and it wasn't for all the sharing on social media, this wouldn't have happened," said Mylissa Santiago.
But the Santiagos are grateful that it did, and although it took a lot of work and hands to prepare these meals, they plan on doing it again in the near future.
Mylissa Santiago tells 21 News a local organization talked about offering up its kitchen when the group decides to do it again.
