2000: A former Mahoning Valley man, Monte Friedkin, is chairman of the Democratic Party in Palm Beach County, Fla., and is involved in the contentious recount of ballots that will determine whether Republican George W. Bush or Democratic Vice President Al Gore is the next president. He says that a handcount will have to be made of the punch card ballots the county uses. 

The Youngstown Civil War Re-enactment Group honored three Civil War soldiers who are buried in Belmont Park Cemetery: Henry M. Vail, William M. Jackson, and Amos Lacey, a black veteran who lived on Oak Hill Avenue. 

The Youngstown State University Penguins play their worst quarter of the season, letting a 20-0 lead they took into the fourth quarter slip away. Southern Illinois won 21-20 before 16,549 fans at Stambaugh Stadium, and YSU must win its final game at Cal-Poly to keep its post-season hopes alive. 

 

1985: Service and technical workers threaten a strike against the Youngstown Hospital Association's three facilities, North Side, South Side, and Tod Babies and Children's hospitals. 

The Ohio Board of Regents approves a $305 million capital improvements budget, in which Youngstown State University will receive only $4.6 million, the least among state universities. 

Craig Beach Village Councilman Julius Yuhasz hopes to attract 400 to 500 participants for the first annual International Triathlon on Labor Day weekend in 1986.

 

1975: Floyd G. Williams, 19, of Leavittsburg, an employee of the Niles Garbage Agency, is killed when struck by a company truck on Woodglen Avenue in Niles. 

The Second Signals Band of Toronto, Canada, in Sharon for the Shenango Valley Veterans Day Parade, places a wreath at the monument to Sharpsville war veterans. 

The 80-year-old Trumbull County Courthouse is undergoing sandblasting as part of a sprucing up for the Bicentennial celebration.

 

1950: The Youngstown & Northern Railroad is the shortest and one of the busiest of six railroads serving Youngstown. About 50 trains a day ply their five miles between Division Street and McDonald.  

The lure of a parade with brass bands playing martial music brings only 2,500 people out in the biting cold for Youngstown's Veterans Day parade. 

David Abraham, a student at East High, and  Ronald Johnson of Chaney are awarded table model radios as winners of the Youngstown Police Department's jaywalking poster contest.
