YOUNGSTOWN Youngstown Police are investigating after a man said he was shot on the Westside by three men trying to steal his marijuana.

The incident began just after 7:30 p.m. Monday when the police department received a report of shots fired on Tyrell Avenue. A caller told police they heard gunfire and saw two people running toward Salt Springs, one wearing a "black puffy coat".

While officers were heading to Tyrell Avenue, a second call came in about a wounded man on Riblet Avenue. Officers changed their route to respond to the Riblet Avenue address.

At the Riblet Avenue home, officers spoke with a man who stated he was shot in front of Tyrell Avenue.

The victim told police that he was shot when three males attempted to rob him of marijuana. He said he started running when he heard a single shot and realized he had been hit in the hip. The man ran to the Riblet Avenue residence where his child's mother lives.

Police saw a hole in the victim's shirt and hoodie, as well as a shallow entry wound in his hip. EMTs transported the victim to St. Elizabeth Hospital in Downtown Youngstown for medical treatment. An officer later said the victim was not considered a trauma case but was still being sent for imaging.

After speaking with the victim, officers returned to Tyrell Avenue, where they found seven spent shell casings in the parking lot and on the grass near the sidewalk.

The casings were collected and logged as evidence.

Police also noted that an apartment window had been shot out.

The case has been referred to the Youngstown Detectives.
