A Monday dog-attack has left Jason Cooke emotionally and mentally shaken. The Healthy Hearts and Paws Project CEO told 21 News it is jarring even to hear a dog bark, as he tries to return to his daily duties assisting the organization.

"Hearing a dog bark brings me right back to that moment and it's terrifying," Cooke said.

Cooke was attacked while attempting to put a recently hospitalized dog into a kennel. He suffered severe bite wounds to the neck, sending him to the hospital.

The attack came from a dog Cooke says was extremely neglected. The dog was taken in by Healthy Hearts and Paws last week after being found at a home in Warren, with visible neck injuries. Cooke said the dog was suffering from deep neck wounds "consistent with an embedded collar or tether, and possible misuse of a prong collar."

Following the incident, Cooke said the dog had to be euthanized.

"As painful as the attack was, it hurt me even more to have him put down," Cooke said in a Facebook post Tuesday.

Cooke told 21 News he will be filing charges against those he believes to have neglected the dog.

"I've been doing this a long time and dogs don't behave like that unless something's happened to them," Cooke said.

The Healthy Hearts and Paws Project is set to have a meeting next week about what could have been done differently, he added.
