Man tells YPD 'old friend' hit him with a bottle, stole his bike

YOUNGSTOWN A late-night encounter on Youngstown’s South Side early Thursday morning ended with an arrest after a man told police that someone he described as “an old friend” allegedly struck him in the face with a bottle before stealing his bike and bag.
The victim was riding his bicycle to a gas station on Market Street at West Avondale Avenue when he saw Terry Pompay, according to an officer’s report. The victim told police that as the two men talked, Pompay allegedly grabbed a wine bottle and struck him in the face, causing him to fall. The attack left the victim with a bleeding cut above his left eye.
Pompay then reportedly took the victim’s bookbag and bicycle before riding south on Market Street. The victim told the police he did not know why Pompay would have attacked him, noting they had known each other for a long period of time, describing him as an old friend.
An ambulance was called to treat the injured man. While a second officer stayed with the victim, another officer began searching for Pompay.
The officer spotted a bicycle matching the description given by the victim, outside another gas station down the street. Pompay then walked outside of the store and passed the bike, denying it was his when asked.
The officer detained Pompay. A store employee confirmed that Pompay had arrived on the bicycle. The victim was then taken to the second gas station and confirmed Pompay was the person who struck him and took his belongings. The victim was able to retrieve his bicycle and bookbag from the scene.
Pompay was arrested for aggravated robbery. The officer later collected three dollars and sixty-six cents in cash from Pompay as evidence. A bookbag Pompay was carrying was found to contain canned food, a hammer, a flashlight, and other items. Pompay, 43, was taken to the Mahoning County jail for booking
