2000: Jim Tressel's Youngstown State University Penguins improve their playoff hopes with a 35-13 win on the road against Cal Poly. 

Paul W. Brown, former Ohio Attorney General, state Supreme Court justice, Youngstown attorney, and World War II hero, dies at 85 in Sarasota, Fla.  William Binning, former Mahoning County GOP chairman, says Brown was the most prominent state Republican to come from this area in recent years.

Playing at Austintown 10, Boulevard Center at the Eastwood Mall, and Cinema South 10 on South Avenue, Jim Carrey stars in "How the Grinch Stole Christmas."  

 

1985: After striking employees reject the Tamarkin Co.'s final contract offer, the company says it will begin closing or selling some of its 13 Valu King stores. 

Boardman Fire Chief Donald Cover, a widely respected arson investigator, announces his retirement after 42 years. 

Mayor Patrick Ungaro will ask Youngstown City Council to approve 4 percent pay raises for 22 city management employees.

 

1975: The Warren Board of Education votes to retain ninth-grade classes in both city high schools. Removing the ninth grade was suggested to reduce overcrowding at Harding and Western Reserve. 

Bids for the construction of basic campus facilities for the Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine in Rootstown total $9.8 million.

Youngstown Fire Engineer George Bode is injured when he falls through a section of a burned-out stairway while fighting a fire at 155 W. Evergreen Ave. 

 

1950: Don Stevens, former South High scholastic star, catches two touchdown passes to lead Illinois, usually a great running team, to a 14-7 victory over Ohio State. 

Copperweld Steel Co. is planning a major expansion and improvement program to increase its electric furnace output in Warren. President F.R.S. Kaplan says the project will cost $1 million. 

The curtain is rising on "Yocohooey II,"  the Youngstown College student musical that has been in rehearsal for weeks. Proceeds from the performance in the C.J. Strouss Memorial Auditorium will be used to establish a scholarship fund.
