The Village of East Palestine announced the retirement of Police Chief Jim Brown on Monday, effective Dec. 6, after 25 years of service.

Stepping into the role will be Patrolman Chris Weingart, who has been with the East Palestine Police Department for over 20 years.

Brown, who spent the last eight years in his current role as chief, believes his successor is more than capable of the position.

"Chris excels in administration and has a deep understanding of the Officers and the Community," Brown said. "He has my full confidence, and I know he will lead with the same dedication that has defined our team."

Village officials expressed enthusiasm for the transition, noting that Weingart's promotion ensures continuity and stability.

"Chief Brown has been more than a leader—he has been a steady hand and a trusted voice for our village," Village Manager Antonio Diaz-Guy stated. "This retirement is the culmination of a long-held personal plan, and we are grateful he chose to spend the entirety of his distinguished career here."

According to the news release, Weingart has served in virtually every capacity within his law enforcement career, from patrol officer to Sergeant, and most recently as second-in-command. The release also states that he is known for his operational expertise, collaborative style and deep institutional knowledge.

A swearing-in ceremony is planned for Dec. 6, 2025.
