Trumbull County author uses writing to help children overcome fears

Edward Novotny, a Warren area native, released two children's books, "I'm Brave at Bedtime" and "I'm Brave on Halloween," with hopes that his work could help children face their fears.
Novotny, a father, said that writing the books came from "a deeply personal place." He stated that a near-death experience and being placed into a medical coma before he was a teenager helped him see the importance of being brave.
"Growing up without consistent guidance and later finding my faith, I promised myself that when I had children, I would give them the courage and love I wished I had during my hardest years," Novotny said.
"I'm Brave on Halloween" follows Max, a nervous but lovable pirate, who faces the fears that come along with the holiday.
"My books are written to help young children overcome fear, bedtime worries, and everyday anxieties with simple affirmations and family-centered storytelling. The series was inspired by my own kids, and the response online has already reached thousands," Novotny said.
"I'm Brave at Bedtime" teaches kids that they shouldn't be afraid of the dark before bed, but they should know they are never truly alone.
The author hopes that his story can help people see that turning hardship into hope can create something meaningful for children.
