Rust City Church prepares 600 thanksgiving meals to distribute to the community
Rust City Church gave away 600 turkey dinners in addition to 70,000 pounds of other foods.
It was all part of their fourth annual Give Back Before You Kick Back food distribution, where cars had been lining up since 11a.m. for a 6p.m. giveaway.
"I think that really shows just the need in the community," Pastor Wes Washington at Rust City Church said. "I think in a time like this now, we want people to know the one place where you can turn to when you feel like you can't turn anywhere else, is to the church," he said.
Church leaders also said the goal here isn't just to provide meals but to remind families across the valley that they aren't alone and they're deeply cared about.
"We're a church that's really about not just talking about Jesus but really showing the community the love of Jesus," Washington said. "I believe that most people aren't going to want to know about the love of God until they first feel the love of god and that's where we come in as his disciples to really show people what the love of God is," he said.
The event took careful planning and several thousands of dollars to make happen.
"In the course of about three weeks, we raised over $20,000 as a church to feed our community and that just shows the heart of Rust City Church and Rust City family," Washington said.
The church has food giveaways every Wednesday in their parking lot.
