COLUMBIANA COUNTY, Ohio - Dozens of cats and a handful of dogs are ready to become your next companion at the Columbiana County Humane Society but before your long walks and fetch in the park, humane agents are reminding potential owners adoption is not a seasonal decision.

“If you're going to do it, know that it's a huge responsibility you're taking another family member home,” Fabian Pike, the Chief Humane Officer Columbiana County said.

Each year agencies see people excited to wake up to their new best friend under the tree but just as soon as they walk out the door they often times end up right back behind the cages.

“You have maybe 15 or 20 animals that you see going out between Christmas and Thanksgiving and all these people are super excited and then you have 25 come back to the shelter,” Pike said.

Pike sees dogs returned often. Sometimes it’s because the dog gets too big, other times owners resent the dogs for breaking a sentimental object. Pike said owners should expect the rocky start - especially with puppies - and to try and keep a level head.

When getting that new pet Pike said people have to give it time to get used to its new environment

“Three days to decompress, three weeks to get used to the individuals around, three months to start feeling comfortable,” Pike said.

And if the relationship doesn’t get better the humane society can connect owners with trainers, keeping the peace in the house and making sure the animals live a long life of love outside of the shelter.

“Remember to love the dog that you took home not just as an item but as a part of your family,” Pike said.

The society has 30 cats and five dogs available for adoption. Volunteer Kaitlyn Mondak and Coordinator Kathy Paster cared for the animals with special turkey surprises on Thanksgiving Day.
