Salem church offers free Thanksgiving dinners to community

SALEM A church in Salem offered free Thanksgiving dinners to community members during the holiday on Thursday, November 27.
First Christian Church, located at 1151 East 6th Street in Salem, held its annual free Thanksgiving dinner between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m.
Although community members could sit and eat, some residents were able to get a meal delivered.
The event is sponsored and supported by organizations from around the Mahoning Valley, including Huffman Fruit Farm and Fresh Mark, to name a few. Fresh Mark provided the church with ham this year.
Additionally, members of the church help to fund the event as well.
Organizers say that this is the fifth year that they have held the free Thanksgiving dinner, and that it continues to grow yearly.
"We have a great group of volunteers through our church. We've also had volunteers call in and ask if they can help with this event because they've seen it each year, so it's a wonderful time for us to give back to the community," said Becky McGuire-Smith with First Christian Church.
The church, in addition to the meals given out during the community meal, also provided over 40 meals through the local hospital's mobile meals program.
