Around 6:20 a.m. Sunday, 21 News heard reports of a fire with possible injuries in New Castle on the 400 block of Waldo Street.

Upon arriving at the scene, a news crew observed that the fire had damaged the building's roof.

Two animals died in the fire, with no residents reported to have injuries at this time.

It was reported by New Castle Assistant Fire Chief Shawn Johnson that a resident within the house had woken up and saw flames before walking outside to look for a fire extinguisher.

"She said she lost her phone, wasn't able to call 911," he said.

Johnson also stated that he believes the heavy water damage and collapsed roof will result in a total loss of the building.

"When the roof collapses, it makes it harder to get to the areas that are on fire," he said.

The American Red Cross was on scene and working with the families directly affected, reporting to have assisted 11 people affected by the fire.

All crews were cleared from the area by early afternoon on Sunday, according to the New Castle Police Department.

The residence is an apartment-type building that has three apartments in it. Residents said that 12 people lived in the building, all of whom made it outside.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. This story will be updated upon finding new information.
