Suspect in string of Youngstown fires faces 18 charges at arraignment today
YOUNGSTOWN - A 59-year-old man accused of setting a series of fires involving vehicles and homes across the city is scheduled to appear for arraignment this afternoon.
Will A. Jones is set to appear for a video arraignment at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday before an administrative judge in Youngstown Municipal Court. He faces 18 total charges related to a string of fires reported in late November.
According to court records filed Monday and Tuesday, Jones is charged with 14 counts of aggravated arson, a first-degree felony. He also faces three felony counts of arson and one misdemeanor count of arson.
The charges stem from an investigation by the Youngstown Fire Department into fires reported at homes on Oakhill Avenue, East Woodland Avenue and Willis Avenue, as well as vehicle fires in the downtown area.
Among the properties damaged was an SUV belonging to George Case, owner of Geo’s Music on West Boardman Street.
"I was horrified once I opened that door," Case said.
The car's interior was burned from the inside, and its contents were damaged beyond repair. The contents included speakers and soundboards. Case says the damage to the vehicle and equipment is around $20,000. He claims the SUV has been totaled.
Case belongs to a band called Geo C and Tha Storm, who travel around northeast Ohio. He is also a DJ who specializes in events for people with special needs.
A GoFundMe page was created to help Case with expenses. The page has raised over $3,200 as of Dec. 2. Case says many people have helped him get through the sudden loss of his vehicle and equipment.
"It's my hope that anything we can do in the future to help some of the other people that were affected by this, we can assist them as well," he said.
59-year-old Will Jones was arrested by authorities in connection with the fire of Case's car as well as one other downtown. Officials say he is also connected to house fires on Oakhill Avenue, East Woodland Avenue, and Willis Avenue.
Youngstown chief fire investigator Charles Hodge says the suspect was taken into custody on Wednesday, Nov. 26 where he was interviewed by authorities.
"After the interview, we were able to charge him," he said.
Hodge says Jones has no personal connections to the owners of the vehicles and houses that burned.
