TRUMBULL COUNTY, OH - Boilers at Trumbull County Jail are now in motion to be replaced, after Trumbull County Commissioners heard from jail administrators at a Tuesday meeting.

Trumbull County Commissioner Rick Hernandez told 21 News the boilers have been an ongoing maintenance issue at the jail; repairs have been made off and on for several years, going back to prior county commissioners' administration. Rather than continue repairing the existing units, new ones will be installed.

Hernandez said he does not believe the jail and its inmates have ever been fully without functioning heat. He added that the current severity of the issue was brought to his and Trumbull County Commissioner Tony Bernard's attention Tuesday.

Hernandez said it is no longer worth putting more money into repairing the boilers or the overtime hours it takes for maintenance crews to address the issues.

"It came to our attention today that these will need to be replaced and Commissioner Bernard and I agree that we are going to do so," Hernandez said.

Before replacement work can be approved and begin, the county will also have to conduct an engineering study.
