WASHINGTON - Great Lakes Cheese Co. Inc., a manufacturer based in Hudson, has issued a voluntary recall for shredded cheese products distributed nationwide due to the potential presence of metal fragments.

The recall affects approximately 1.5 million bags of shredded cheese sold under more than two dozen private-label and store brands at major retailers, including Walmart, Target, and Aldi. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration classified the action as a Class II recall, indicating that while exposure to the product may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences, the probability of serious health issues is remote.

According to the recall notice, the concern stems from a supplier’s raw material that could contain small metal pieces. To date, there have been no confirmed reports of illnesses or injuries related to the consumption of these products.

The Hudson-based company distributed the affected items to retailers and distribution centers in 31 states, including Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Florida and Texas, as well as Puerto Rico.

Consumers are advised to check their refrigerators for products matching the specific UPC codes listed below. Shoppers who possess the recalled cheese should not consume it and may return the items to the place of purchase for a full refund.
