Howard's Clothes to close after 75 years
A longtime staple in downtown Warren will be closing its doors soon.
WARREN A longtime staple in downtown Warren will be closing its doors soon.
Richard and Jean Lawnhurst say Howard's Clothes will be going out of business, telling 21 News they want to spend more time with family.
"We've watched generations grow up, and the children are now customers, and it's been gratifying," said Jean Lawnhurst.
Jean's father, Howard, purchased the building that houses the current location in 1963, 14 years after he bought Farr's Clothing, ultimately before moving the business into the building on the corner of North Park Avenue and East Market Street.
"He changed the name to Howards, and that was his name," said Richard Lawnhurst.
Richard Lawnhurst says he met his wife, Jean, Howard's daughter, while the two attended The Ohio State University. The pair expanded the Warren-based clothing store to Conneaut, Ohio, all before purchasing the main location in the mid-70s.
"In the early 80s we sold the ones up in Conneaut and just devoted ourselves to Howard's Clothes, downtown Warren, Ohio, which has been a wonderful venue," Richard Lawnhurst explained.
After 50 years of running Howard's clothing, Richard and Jean say it's time to move on, telling 21 News they want to spend more time with loved ones, which is hard to do working six days a week and some nights.
The couple still own the building and are hoping their next tenant will be a similar asset to the city. They've already begun marking down merchandise, with sales starting up to 20% off.
A going-out-of-business sale will begin Monday, December 8.
