2000: The  Ohio Transportation Review Advisory Council, of which Youngstown Mayor Patrick Ungaro is a member, awards more than $54 million for four Mahoning Valley road and bridge projects.

A Boardman Township family has lost a lawsuit that contended that four members of the Boardman High School volleyball team participated in hazing activities. 

Sara Pecchia of Canfield plays Dorothy, and Emily Morris of Hubbard plays Glinda the Good Witch in the "Wonderful Wizard of Oz" at Youngstown State University. 

 

1985: Gerry Faust, who resigned as head football coach of Notre Dame, is taking a serious look at taking the head coach job at Youngstown State University, reports Vindicator sports editor Chuck Perazich. 

Thirty-eight members of the Ohio Boychoir, under the direction of Chaney High graduate Alexander Musichek, sang a medley of 15  carols at Volney Rogers Junior High. Later in the day, the choir performed at West Elementary and then at St. Columba Cathedral.  

The Rev. Timothy Graetz of Atlantic, Iowa, a former missionary in Tanzania, is named pastor of Bethel Temple Assembly of God on Mahoning Avenue. 

 

1975: An experiment in hauling iron ore from Lake Erie to Youngstown by way of state Route 11 has the potential to reduce the Mahoning Valley's disadvantage in the cost of assembling materials for steel making. 

The Mahoning Valley's 25,000 General Motors employees will have a long Christmas-New Year's holiday of nearly two weeks, reflecting the United Auto Workers' new contract, which includes extra holidays.

1950: A man who dragged a 15-year-old East Side girl into a vacant lot on N. Prospect Street is scared off by her screams for help. It is the seventh such attack in the city since October. 

Youngstown is only 10 percent prepared for an enemy attack, according to an analysis of a civilian defense questionnaire by the American Municipal Association in Washington. 

Clear weather greets a throng of downtown Youngstown shoppers for the first extended Wednesday night of shopping since the Thanksgiving blizzard.
