MAHONING COUNTY, Ohio - Maple tapping season is nearly here and for anyone interested in producing their own syrup, a hands-on workshop will be available in January.

The Ohio State University Extension office in Mahoning County will be hosting a Backyard Maple Syrup Production Workshop focused on the maple syrup production process. It will be held at 490 South Broad Street, Canfield, Ohio on Thursday January 15 from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. 

The class, designed for beginners and hobbyists, will provide participants with a hands-on opportunity to learn:

  • When, where and how to tap maple trees
  • Proper sap handling and boiling techniques
  • Safe finishing and packaging
  • Maple tree care and management

The registration fee for the workshop is $20 per person and includes all supplies, instructional handouts and 2 taps with tubing. The class will include both indoor and outdoor hands-on demonstrations. 

Community members interested in learning a new skill, exploring the tradition of syrup production or expand their homesteading knowledge are invited to register at the OSU event website.
