Youngstown seeks $3.2 million for Oak Hill Avenue reconstruction

YOUNGSTOWN - Youngstown city officials are preparing to launch a $3.2 million overhaul of Oak Hill Avenue, provided they can secure federal support for the project.
City Council will vote on Wednesday on an emergency resolution authorizing the city to apply for Federal Surface Transportation Block Grant funds. The money is administered locally through the Eastgate Regional Council of Governments.
The proposed project targets a corridor of Oak Hill Avenue between West Woodland Avenue and High Street. According to the legislation, the roadway is classified as a "federal aid roadway," signifying its importance to the city's transportation network.
The scope of the work includes not only resurfacing but also a full replacement of the existing roadway, curbs, storm sewers, and sidewalks.
The estimated total price for the reconstruction is $3,271,006.00. If the grant is approved, the federal government would cover the bulk of the expense, but the city must commit to a local matching share of roughly 20 percent, or $654,201.00.
Council is treating the legislation as an emergency measure to ensure the funding application can be submitted within the next 30 days. If the funding is secured, the project would address what officials describe as a "need for roadway rehabilitation" in the corridor.
