Student athletes look on as East Palestine staff assist at crash scene

EAST PALESTINE, Ohio - Two East Palestine City Schools staff members provided emergency assistance at a vehicle crash site Thursday night while transporting the girls’ basketball team.
Bus driver Matthew Beatty and varsity head coach Rick Gates were returning to the district following an away game at United Local when they encountered a two-car crash. One of the vehicles involved had caught fire.
Beatty and Gates stopped the bus and used the vehicle's onboard fire extinguisher and medical kit to assist those involved in the crash. They remained at the scene providing aid until emergency responders arrived.
Superintendent James Rook stated that the staff members prioritized the safety of the students on the bus while managing the scene.
"Our students look up to and respect their coaches and bus drivers, but last night, Matt and Rick gave them an example of true leadership," Rook said. "We are incredibly proud that our students witnessed such heroism".
Rook noted that the actions offered a practical lesson in civic responsibility for the students on board.
