YOUNGSTOWN - Commuters in the Mahoning and Shenango valleys face a cold start to the work week on Monday, as light snow and single-digit temperatures have prompted parking bans and widespread school schedule changes.

At 5 a.m., the temperature at Youngstown-Warren Regional Airport was 7 degrees with a wind chill of minus 6. Light snow was reported, and a lake effect snow warning remains in effect for Mercer and Venango counties until 7 a.m. Monday. The National Weather Service cautions that additional accumulation of up to two inches is possible, creating slippery road conditions.

Dozens of school districts across the region have delayed start times or canceled classes.

Major districts, including Austintown, Boardman, Canfield, Niles, Poland, and Warren-area schools, are operating on a two-hour delay. Schools opting to close for the day include Beaver Local, Cardinal Mooney, Liberty, Lordstown, Southern Local, and Valley Christian.

Motorists should be aware of parking restrictions in place to aid snow removal crews.

The City of Niles implemented a parking ban on all city streets that runs until 11 a.m. Monday. In Youngstown, a snow emergency parking ban went into effect at midnight and remains until further notice. The Youngstown ban prohibits parking on streets or alleys that are 25 feet wide or less and have no driveway facilities. Violators in both cities may be subject to towing.

Traffic is moving on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard in Youngstown after a crash Sunday night. A two-vehicle collision occurred around 10:30 p.m. near the 7-11 connector, blocking the northbound lane for a time, but the roadway has since reopened.

The forecast calls for cloudy skies today with a high near 21 degrees and southwest winds of 6 to 10 mph. Tuesday is expected to be mostly sunny with a high near 33.
