Jury selection scheduled for former Girard youth coach facing 19 sex charges

WARREN, Ohio - Jury selection is scheduled to begin Tuesday in the trial of a former youth softball coach facing 19 charges related to sex crimes involving minors.
Shane Genetta, 40, of Girard, is to appear before Judge Cynthia Westcott Rice in Trumbull County Common Pleas Court. He is charged with multiple counts of first-degree felony rape, gross sexual imposition, illegal use of a minor in nudity-oriented material, and pandering sexually oriented matter involving a minor.
The proceedings combine two separate criminal cases that were merged following a state motion granted by the court in September. In October, the court ordered the counts from the second case to be renumbered sequentially, resulting in a total of 19 counts against Genetta.
Court records show the allegations against the former head coach of a girls' softball team in Girard date back to 2017.
The charges include eight counts of rape, one count of gross sexual imposition, four counts regarding the illegal use of a minor in nudity-oriented material, and six counts of pandering sexually oriented matter involving a minor.
Authorities arrested Genetta in May following an investigation into allegations dating back to March 2017. Before his arrest, Genetta served as a head coach for a team in the Girard Youth Baseball Association.
Genetta is represented by defense attorney Aaron Meikle, who filed a motion last week requesting that Genetta be permitted to appear in court wearing civilian clothing rather than a jail jumpsuit during the trial.
Genetta has remained in the Trumbull County Jail since his arrest. Opening statements are expected to follow once a jury is seated.
