Passenger accused of assaulting WRTA bus driver over wait times

A city man is facing an assault charge after police say he attacked a bus driver last week following a dispute over transit wait times.
Marshall Herron, 24, of East Lucius Avenue, surrendered to authorities in the lobby of the Youngstown Police Department on Monday afternoon. He was booked into the Mahoning County jail on a first-degree misdemeanor count of assault.
The charge stems from an incident reported shortly before 8:30 a.m. on Dec. 11. According to a police report, the driver told responding officers that a male passenger boarded the bus at the downtown station on West Federal Street. The driver stated the man was angry about wait times and drop-off locations.
The situation escalated when the bus arrived at a stop at Glenwood Ave. and Canfield Rd. Police said the passenger began hitting the driver in the head with closed fists three to four times while getting off the bus. The driver described the physical attack as completely unprovoked, noting the passenger said nothing immediately before striking him.
The suspect fled the scene on foot, walking west on West Indianola Avenue.
The victim was taken to a hospital for treatment of his injuries. A transit supervisor responded to the scene and advised officers that security footage from the bus station would be available to detectives.
Investigators identified Herron as the suspect, and a warrant was issued for his arrest. He turned himself in shortly after 2 p.m. Monday and was taken into custody without incident.
Herron is scheduled to appear for arraignment in Youngstown Municipal Court on Wednesday.
