Former Austintown rehab operator remains jailed as state charges proceed

A federal judge decided Wednesday to keep a former Austintown drug rehab owner in jail while his new local criminal cases move forward in state court.
Ryan Sheridan, 45, appeared before Judge Benita Pearson in federal court for a hearing regarding his supervised release. Sheridan was previously released from prison in November 2024 after serving time for a multi-million-dollar healthcare fraud case involving his now-defunct Braking Point Recovery Center on Route 46.
Under the rules of his release, Sheridan was required to stay out of legal trouble. However, he was arrested in Austintown in late October on charges of kidnapping and domestic violence.
During the six-minute hearing on Wednesday, Sheridan denied violating the rules of his federal supervision. His lawyer asked the judge to pause the federal proceedings to allow the kidnapping and domestic violence case in Mahoning County to be handled first.
Judge Pearson agreed to put the federal violation case on hold for the time being. However, she ordered that Sheridan remain in the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service. Ryan has been in the Mahoning County Jail since October 27.
The state charges against Sheridan come from an October incident where a woman told police he physically attacked her and prevented her from leaving a home. Those charges were recently moved from a lower court to the Mahoning County Common Pleas Court for a grand jury to review.
Sheridan originally gained notoriety as the owner of Braking Point Recovery Center. In 2021, he was ordered to pay back more than $24 million for billing the government for medical services that were never provided or were not necessary.
If the court eventually finds that Sheridan violated his release conditions, he could be sent back to federal prison.
