A Canfield man won a $50,000 Powerball prize after buying a ticket for a jackpot that has since climbed to a record-breaking $1.5 billion.

The winner, only identified by the Lottery Commission as Bryan, bought the winning ticket at the Meijer store located on Boardman-Canfield Rd. in Boardman. He told lottery officials he decided to play after noticing the jackpot had surpassed the $1 billion mark.

The winner used significant dates to select his numbers. While he missed the total jackpot by a single number, the $50,000 win comes just days before the holiday.

"It’s going to be a very good Christmas," Bryan said, though he noted he has not yet determined specific plans for the funds.

After state and federal tax withholdings totaling 27.125%, Bryan will receive a net payment of $36,437.50.

The Powerball jackpot has continued to grow following the drawing. The estimated prize for the Saturday, Dec. 20 drawing is $1.5 billion. This marks the 45th drawing in the current jackpot run, setting a record for the most drawings in a single cycle.

The drawing can be seen on 21 News at 11.

According to lottery officials, the odds of winning any prize are 1 in 24.9, while the odds of winning the jackpot are 1 in 292.2 million.
