Multiple fights at Chaney leaves kids maced by police, two in custody, shots fired

Multiple fights at Chaney High School during Friday night's basketball game against East High School left students maced by Youngstown Police officers.
More than a dozen police officers responded to the school at 731 S. Hazelwood Avenue at 8:18 p.m. for crowd control, where officers found three juvenile males fighting. Officers said the same three had three fights as officers worked to break it up and disperse the students. The fights took place in the back parking lot of the school until police removed them from the property.
A fourth fight between six to 10 juveniles ensued shortly after and according to the police report, somewhere between 50 to 100 kids were observing.
Officers maced the group of fighting youth, who then dispersed.
A few minutes later, another group of 7 juveniles was fighting on the building's north side. When the youth failed to listen to the officers, the juveniles were also maced, and they began to leave the area.
Police left the scene by 9:15 p.m., but 15 minutes later, officers were called to a convenience store on Hartford Avenue for a report of a white Toyota vehicle with some of the kids who were fighting at the school, looking to continue the fight.
Officers spotted the white Toyota on North Hartford Avenue coming towards their patrol car. Officers activated their lights and pulled behind the car, and both rear doors opened, and the occupants attempted to flee, according to police.
Six officers were removed from the vehicle and officers ordered everyone to place their hands on the car's roof. Officers found a loaded gun covered by a ball cap on the back seat of the vehicle.
One juvenile had a warrant through the Mahoning County Common Pleas and was transferred to JJC. One person in the vehicle was arrested, 18-year-old Terrian Christian, for Improper Handling of Firearms in a Motor Vehicle.
Just before 10 p.m., officers were called to West Glenaven Avenue for reports of gunfire.
Officers on scene were told the gunfire was related to the earlier fight at Chaney.
Witnesses at the scene told officers the incident stemmed from an incident at Chaney High School before the basketball game began.
According to the police report, a juvenile at the game was hit by an adult woman.
The report states that three vehicles were seen near a house on W. Glenaven: a white sedan, a silver Dodge Ram truck, and a red Jeep. One at the scene was believed to have been carrying a long rifle.
As the vehicles drove from the scene, one of the vehicles fired shots towards the house. Police gathered shell casings at the scene.
On Monday night, the Youngstown City School District released the following statement:
Following an incident after the Friday, December 19, Chaney versus East basketball game at Chaney High School, the Youngstown Police Department intervened to de-escalate the situation and ensure the safety of those in attendance. We are working closely with law enforcement to review the details of the incident.
At no time was there a firearm fired on school property; additionally, any altercation did not occur during the game, but after. We've had numerous sporting events this school year without incident. Although this situation is serious, it does not reflect on our overall athletic events. Furthermore, the behavior displayed by those involved does not reflect the values or mission of YCSD.
Head Coach, Marlon McGaughy said in statement:
"It's always outsiders. Chaney and East never get involved in fights with each other, but it happens on our grounds so we take the heat. Everyone wants to come to Chaney games and start stuff. We can't control when other people come here and and start problems, I'm so sick of our kids getting a bad name and a bad rep while other kids go scot-free. Our leaders do everything possible to make sure each and every person that walks on our campus is safe, we have metal detectors because other schools come and cause problems."
