GROVE CITY, Pa. - In Grove City, firefighters were called out Friday, Dec. 19 after some business owners alerted them about a strong gas odor coming from the basements of buildings on South Broad Street.

"They have identified what looks to be and smells like and appears to be gasoline in the sanitary sewer system," Second Assistant Fire Chief, Jared Hoffman said.

The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection is now investigating how gasoline ended up in the sewer system. Officials believe it may have come from one of the two gas stations on West Main Street, Country Fair or Marathon.

The smell still lingers in many businesses along the street. The timeline for its resolution remains uncertain.

The manager of Clark's Donuts shared her concerns.

'I just would really like this fixed for all businesses down here, you know. This affects customers, you know, and as well as workers smelling it all day," Tina Daniels said.

The owner of Saxony House Furniture hopes the issue is resolved soon.

"I think people are working on it, to try and resolve it. I mean, we're just going to have to tough through it till it's over and and hope that they get it resolved in a hurry," Randy Risch said.

Fire leaders say there is no cause for alarm because the fuel vapor levels are not considered dangerous. If a gas odor is detected in a residence, it is recommended to add water to floor and fixture traps, flush drains, and ventilate the area.
